Dear Ministers,
I am writing to ask for your support in protecting Maju Forest because I believe that conserving existing natural ecosystems is an important part of Singapore’s long-term sustainability and climate resilience.
Singapore has demonstrated global leadership in sustainability through initiatives such as the Singapore Green Plan 2030, which recognises the importance of strengthening our natural environment, enhancing biodiversity and building a more resilient city. Protecting remaining natural forests is a critical part of achieving these ambitions.
Mature forests provide climate benefits that cannot be quickly recreated. They help regulate local temperatures, retain water, support biodiversity and contribute to ecological stability. In an increasingly urbanised environment facing rising temperatures and more frequent climate-related challenges, preserving existing natural systems is a practical form of climate adaptation.
Maju Forest represents more than a patch of greenery. It is a living ecosystem that supports a diversity of species and provides ecological functions developed over decades. While new parks and planted landscapes have an important role, they cannot immediately replicate the complexity, resilience and environmental services provided by an established forest.
Protecting natural forests also strengthens Singaporeans’ connection with sustainability. People are more likely to value and protect nature when they have opportunities to experience it directly. Allowing children and communities to develop familiarity with genuine forest environments helps build environmental stewardship across generations.
As Singapore continues to pursue a sustainable future, decisions about land use must consider not only immediate needs but also the long-term value of natural capital. Once an established forest is removed, the ecological relationships and benefits it provides cannot simply be replaced.
I respectfully ask that you support the permanent protection of Maju Forest, raise its importance within Parliament and Government discussions, and encourage a reconsideration of the current plans for the site in light of its contribution to Singapore’s climate resilience, biodiversity and sustainability goals.
