I am writing to ask for your support in protecting Maju Forest because I believe that access to authentic natural environments is an important part of nurturing resilient, curious and healthy young Singaporeans.
Singapore’s education system aims not only to develop academic capabilities, but also to nurture character, creativity, adaptability and a sense of responsibility towards society and the environment. Natural forests provide a unique learning environment where these qualities can develop through direct experience.
Maju Forest offers children opportunities to observe, explore and interact with a living ecosystem. Unlike highly managed parks, a natural forest presents complexity, uncertainty and discovery. These experiences encourage curiosity, problem-solving and independent thinking, while helping young people develop a deeper understanding of biodiversity and Singapore’s natural heritage.
Research increasingly shows that time spent in natural environments supports children’s wellbeing, attention, creativity and emotional development. In a highly urbanised and digital society, access to nature provides an important balance by allowing young people to experience the physical world directly, develop confidence outdoors and build resilience through exploration.
Natural environments also support environmental education in a way that classroom learning alone cannot. When students encounter native plants, wildlife and ecological relationships firsthand, sustainability becomes something they experience rather than simply a concept they study. This helps cultivate the stewardship mindset needed for Singapore’s long-term sustainability goals.
Protecting Maju Forest would therefore represent an investment in future generations. While parks and educational facilities remain important, an established forest provides a living ecosystem with layers of complexity that cannot be quickly recreated. Preserving such places ensures that future students can continue learning from Singapore’s natural landscapes.
I respectfully ask that you support the permanent protection of Maju Forest, raise its importance within Parliament and Government discussions, and encourage a reconsideration of the current plans for the site in light of its long-term value for education, youth development and environmental stewardship.
