Dear Minister Rajah,
I am writing to ask for your support in protecting Maju Forest because I believe that preserving access to authentic natural environments is an important part of creating the kind of liveable Singapore that encourages people to build families and see a long-term future here.
Singapore’s population strategy recognises that decisions about marriage and parenthood are influenced by many factors, including housing, financial security, work-life balance and the quality of the environment in which families live. While protecting a forest alone cannot address these challenges, ensuring that Singapore remains a place where people can experience meaningful connection with nature is an important part of supporting family wellbeing.
Natural forests provide benefits that landscaped parks cannot fully replicate. They offer children opportunities for exploration, curiosity and unstructured play, helping them develop confidence, creativity and a connection with the natural world. For parents, access to nearby nature provides opportunities for families to spend quality time together away from the pressures of urban life.
A growing body of research suggests that access to biodiverse natural environments supports mental wellbeing, reduces stress and strengthens social connection. These benefits matter for families, particularly in a densely populated city where daily life can be demanding. For couples considering parenthood, a healthier and less stressful living environment can contribute to a greater sense of wellbeing, security and confidence in building a family. A Singapore that supports healthy families must consider not only physical infrastructure, but also the environments that help people thrive.
Mature forests such as Maju Forest are also irreplaceable community assets. Unlike newly created green spaces, they contain established ecosystems and provide experiences of nature that cannot be recreated quickly. Protecting such places demonstrates that Singapore values the wellbeing of future generations as much as its physical development.
As Singapore continues to consider how to encourage marriage, parenthood and a strong sense of belonging, preserving meaningful access to nature should be part of that conversation.
I respectfully ask that you support the permanent protection of Maju Forest, raise its importance within Parliament and Government discussions, and encourage a reconsideration of the current plans for the site in light of its long-term value to Singapore’s families and future generations.
