Dear Minister Ong,

I am writing to ask for your support in protecting Maju Forest because I believe it represents an important investment in Singapore’s long-term health, complementing our healthcare system by helping to prevent illness before it occurs.

A growing body of research shows that regular access to biodiverse natural environments provides greater physical and psychological health benefits than access to landscaped parks alone. Natural forests reduce stress, improve mood, restore attention, encourage physical activity and are associated with lower risks of anxiety, depression and cardiovascular disease. Protecting places such as Maju Forest would help strengthen Singapore’s preventive health agenda.

Natural forests also encourage people of all ages to spend more time outdoors. Unlike highly managed parks, they offer richer sensory experiences, greater biodiversity and a stronger sense of discovery. These qualities foster repeated visits, walking, nature appreciation and social connection, all of which contribute to healthier lifestyles and improved wellbeing.

Singapore faces increasing healthcare demands from an ageing population and rising rates of chronic disease. Investing in natural assets that help improve mental and physical health is a practical way to reduce future healthcare pressures while improving quality of life. Protecting Maju Forest should therefore be viewed not only as an environmental decision, but also as a public health measure.

Finally, preserving natural forests demonstrates that Singapore values the conditions that allow people to flourish, not merely the treatment of illness. A healthy nation depends on healthy environments, and once an established forest is lost, its unique health benefits cannot be recreated through new parkland.

I respectfully ask that you support the permanent protection of Maju Forest, raise its importance within Parliament and Government discussions, and encourage a reconsideration of the current plans for the site in light of its long-term value to Singapore’s health and wellbeing.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,
